Suppramalleolar orthosis (SMO)

Supramalleolar orthosis provides support to the ankle and foot. At Orthotics UK all of our SMO are custom made specific to your requirements. SMOs are short in construction extending to just above the ankle enabling you to wear them discreetly and comfortably within a range of footwear styles. The close fitting nature of the orthosis helps to align and control the movement of the foot. We are able to use a variety of padding and straps to ensure your orthosis is comfortable to wear.

What are the indications for use of a SMO?

There are many indications for using a SMO. These include:

  • High or low tone
  • Foot deformities
  • Flat feet
  • Instability of the foot and ankle

What is the process to be receive a SMO?

The process to receive a SMO would be:

  • Assessment
  • Measuring / Casting
  • Fitting
  • Review

Our experienced orthotists will complete a full assessment to determine your suitability for a SMO. They will observe your walking pattern as well as discuss with you your difficulties and needs. All of our supramalleolar orthoses are custom made to your requirements, this will be achieved by taking a series of measures and a cast of your foot and ankle. The bespoke nature of these orthoses allows Orthotics UK to ensure your orthoses are comfortable and easy to wear.
