Silicone AFO

A Silicone AFO (SAFO) is a low profile device which helps to control alignment and stability of the foot and ankle. Due to the close fitting nature and design of the SAFO it can be worn with or without shoes, providing increased support all day.

An ankle foot orthosis (AFO) is a device that controls the alignment of, and provides stability to, the foot and ankle. The Silicone AFO (SAFO) is a new option for the treatment of the condition drop-foot. A SAFO helps lift the foot during the swing phase of walking by supporting from the top of the foot up to the shin area.

What are the indications for use of a Silicone AFO?

There are many indications for using a Silicone AFO. These include:

  • Flaccid Drop Foot
  • Weak dorsiflexion (lifting your toes)
  • Weak plantar flexion (pointing your toes)
  • Plantar flexion without dorsiflexion
  • Drop foot with mild spasticity
  • Weak Medial/Lateral (side to side) ankle stability
  • Over pronation (foot rolling inwards) or over supination (foot rolling outwards) of the foot

What conditions are Silicone AFO often used for?

Silicone AFOs are often used for the following conditions:

What is the process to be receive a Silicone AFO?

The process to receive an Silicone AFO would be:

  • Assessment
  • Measuring / Casting
  • FItting
  • Review

Silicone AFOs are made bespoke to your needs therefore your orthotist will need to complete a full assessment they will then take a series of measurements and a plaster cast of your foot, ankle and lower leg. By completing this process it enables the SAFO to be made specific to you. Once your SAFO has been manufactured you will meet with your orthotist to ensure the fit is perfect.
