Lycra devices can help and support children with a range of needs. As each device is made to measure it can be designed and manufactured specifically for each person. The Lycra can include specific areas of reinforcement and support with different configurations of zips and velcro fastenings being added for ease of wear.

What types of pediatric lycra devices are available?

Lycra devices are all custom made and can therefore be made to fit any child. There are a number of lycra devices specifically for children which include:

  • DMO Neonate Suit
  • DMO Night Positioning shorts

DMO Neonate Suit

This device is designed for premature babies supporting them with difficulties such as poor trunk and head control as well as difficulties in settling. It can also be used for babies who require increased sensory feedback.

DMO Night Positioning shorts

These neat shorts are worn at night to prevent excessive hip movement. Normally these shorts hold the legs apart to prevent poor hip posture and potential hip dislocations. They can also be used post hip surgery to allow a safe and comfortable position for sleeping.

What is the process to be receive a pediatric lycra device?

The process to receive a pediatric lycra device would be:

  • Assessment
  • Measuring
  • Fitting
  • Review

To ensure your child’s lycra device provides the maximum level of support your orthotist will need to take a number of different measures. This will vary on the type of device selected for your child. The orthotist will also discuss with you the various options of fastening the device to make donning, doffing and toileting as easy as possible.
