Custom Helmets for Craniotomy

A custom helmet for craniotomy is a specialised protective device designed to safeguard and support the head after a surgical procedure called a craniotomy. A craniotomy involves the removal of part of the skull, often to relieve pressure on the brain following trauma, surgery, or neurological conditions. This protective helmet ensures the exposed area of the head is shielded from impact, reducing the risk of further injury.

These helmets may also be referred to as:

  • Post-craniotomy helmets
  • Cranial protection helmets
  • Protective headgear for craniotomy

Conditions That May Require a Custom Helmet for Craniotomy.

A custom helmet post craniotomy is often prescribed for individuals recovering from:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Brain surgeries that necessitate temporary skull removal
  • Stroke or brain swelling requiring decompression
  • Neurological conditions like hydrocephalus or brain tumors

The helmet is vital during the recovery period when the skull segment has been removed and before reconstructive surgery or permanent cranial repair. There are occasions where the skull cannot be repaired so comfortable and cosmetically acceptable long term helmet solutions are required.

Benefits of a Custom Helmet for Craniotomy.

  • Protection: Provides robust protection to the exposed area of the head, reducing the risk of injury from accidental bumps or falls.
  • Stability: Ensures the head is stabilised and safeguarded as the brain and surrounding tissues heal.
  • Custom Fit: Each helmet is tailored to the individual’s unique head shape, ensuring comfort and effective protection.
  • Peace of Mind: Offers reassurance for patients and caregivers, enabling safe participation in day-to-day activities.

Types of Helmet for Craniotomy.

In most cases, we recommend a full protective helmet to provide comprehensive safety and support. Below are two examples of such helmets, which offer maximum protection to the affected area.

However, we understand that not everyone can or will tolerate wearing a full helmet. Some individuals may experience discomfort, such as severe headaches, while others may not feel comfortable with the cosmetic appearance of the helmet.

In these cases, we explore creative alternatives tailored to each person’s unique needs. For example, we have successfully provided a 3D printed half-shell protection device. This shell, as seen in the image below, fits inside a regular bobble hat or cap. While this solution does not offer the same level of support as a full helmet, it provides essential protection for individuals who, for various reasons, cannot wear a traditional helmet. In certain cases it is better than the alternative, no protection at all. This approach is particularly useful for any patients who are unable to undergo cranial repair, offering a functional and cosmetically acceptable option for head protection.

The Assessment and Manufacturing Process of a Helmet for Craniotomy.

  • Assessment: The process begins with a consultation, where our Orthotists assess the patient’s needs, medical history, and head shape. Advanced non radiation 3D image scanning technology is often used to create precise measurements and a detailed map of the head.
  • Design: Using the scan, a custom helmet or shell is designed to fit perfectly, taking into account the location of the craniectomy and any specific needs for padding or adjustments.
  • Fabrication: The helmet is crafted using high-quality materials that balance protection with comfort.
  • Fitting: Once the helmet is ready, the patient attends a fitting session to ensure it provides optimal comfort and security. Adjustments can be made as needed to perfect the fit.
  • Follow-up: A follow-up appointment is arranged to monitor progress, ensure the helmet continues to fit properly, and make any necessary modifications.
