Bespoke Safety Footwear

Orthotics UK provides made to measure protective footwear suitable for use in an industrial setting. Our custom made safety footwear is manufactured to British standard BS EN 20 345-1, with European CE marking control.

We are able to make adaptations such as raises or wedges to existing protective footwear, or produce completely bespoke safety footwear from scratch. Reinforcements can be built into any aspect of the shoe to suit specific needs.

Who could benefit from wearing bespoke or adapted protective footwear?

At Orthotics UK, we specialise in modifying and producing bespoke footwear to accommodate feet that may not fit comfortably into standard shoes or require additional support for the foot and ankle. We offer a wide range of adaptations to accommodate various foot deformities and provide targeted support or relief following injury or illness.

Our modifications are integrated within the structure of protective footwear, ensuring the benefits of orthopaedic support while meeting health and safety regulations. This means you can enjoy the comfort and protection of specialist footwear without compromising on workplace safety.

Bespoke footwear can be beneficial to individuals who experience difficulties related to:

  • Neuropathy (including diabetic)
  • Pes cavus (high arched foot)
  • Pes planus (collapsed arch/ flat foot)
  • Hammer toes
  • Bunions
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Any foot deformity, following trauma or as a result of disease.

What adaptations and accommodations can be made to custom made safety footwear?

Orthotics UK works closely with our manufacturing partners to produce footwear that achieves a desired functional outcome for our patients. Specific adaptations that can be made include:

  • Deepened toe box, to provide relief for hammer toes or rheumatoid conditions
  • Increased width at the forefoot or rearfoot sections to accommodate foot shape
  • Relief over the inside of the big toe (hallux) joint to accommodate bunions (hallux valgus)
  • Lowered tab points, to allow for larger opening at the front of the shoe and make it easier to get the foot into the shoe
  • Medial (inside) and lateral (outside) stiffeners, providing greater support on the desired side of the foot
  • Heel raises and cups to allow for improved positioning and support of the foot.

What is the process for a patient to receive bespoke protective footwear?

An initial assessment with one of our orthotists will take place where your feet will be examined and options for footwear discussed with you. It is likely that your orthotist will also conduct a gait assessment during this appointment, to gain a more holistic view of how your body works as a unit. Measurements for footwear will be taken, and a plaster cast or scan if necessary.

Following the assessment and measuring/casting, your footwear will be manufactured and a fitting appointment made, where you will return to our clinic and have the footwear checked and fitted by an orthotist. This will ensure that the desired support is achieved and that the footwear is effective in its function.
