The Bioness L300 Go FES System

The Bioness L300 Go is an advanced functional electrical stimulation (FES) device designed to provide targeted electrical stimulation to weak leg muscles. It is most commonly used to help counteract drop foot—a condition where an individual struggles to lift the foot upwards (dorsiflexion), making walking difficult and increasing the risk of trips and falls.

The Bioness L300 Go delivers electrical stimulation through an electrode attached inside a calf band, which activates the necessary muscles and nerves to aid movement.

What is the difference between the L100 Go and the L300 Go FES systems?

  • The L300 Go features a more advanced electrode, enabling the orthotist to precisely target the stimulation area. This enhanced precision allowing for greater control of pronation (foot turning in) and supination (foot rolling out), helping to lift the foot in the most natural and effective way possible.
  • The L300 Go offers the flexibility to add an optional thigh piece at any time, enhancing support and functionality to the whole limb.

Additional Support for Hip and Knee Muscles

In addition to assisting with drop foot, the L300 Go can be used to support weak muscles around the hip and knee joints. An electrode inside a thigh cuff delivers targeted stimulation to the hamstrings or quadriceps muscles, promoting knee and hip stability. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing weakness or stiffness in these areas. While the thigh cuff is typically used alongside the calf cuff, it can also function independently.

Conditions That the Bioness L300 Go FES Can Treat

The Bioness L300 Go is effective in treating central nervous system (CNS) disorders that cause drop foot, including:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Stroke
  • Brain Injury
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Brain Tumour
  • Cerebral Palsy (CP)
  • Incomplete Paralysis
  • Motor Neurone Disease (depending on type and stage of progression).
  • Hereditary Spastic Paresis

This list is not exhaustive. If you are unsure whether you are a suitable candidate for the L300 Go, please contact us for further discussion.

How Does the Bioness L300 Go FES System Work?

The Bioness L300 Go provides targeted electrical stimulation through the skin to activate weak muscles. It does this via an electrode placed inside the calf cuff. The stimulation is not painful and is often described as a "fizzy" sensation, which becomes less noticeable over time.

Unlike other FES systems, the Bioness L300 Go is completely wireless. It features:

  • A calf cuff with an onboard computer
  • Gyroscope technology that detects when stimulation is needed during walking

This system ensures the foot is lifted at the right moment, preventing stumbling, reducing the risk of falls, and lowering energy expenditure.

Benefits of the Bioness L300 Go FES System

Using the Bioness L300 Go can provide numerous benefits, including:

  • Improved walking speed and pattern
  • Increased confidence while walking
  • Greater ability to walk longer distances
  • Improved mobility
  • Reduced risk of trips and falls
  • Easy to fit and use
  • Carryover effects – benefits may continue even when the device is not worn
  • Increased muscle strength in fatigued muscles

What is the process to receive a FES device for lower limb application?

Step 1: Suitability Assessment

Your first step is to book an assessment with one of our orthotists. During the appointment, we will:

  • Observe your walking pattern (gait analysis)
  • Test the range of motion in your lower limb joints
  • Assess muscle strength
  • Review your full medical history

If you are already using an FES system or have undergone a suitability assessment elsewhere, please provide us with the details. In some cases, this may allow us to proceed directly to Step 2 without requiring a suitability assessment.

Step 2: Two-Week Home Trial

If you are deemed suitable for one of our FES systems, we will order your trial device for a two-week home trial. You will then return for an appointment, where the orthotist will:

The process to receive a FES device for drop foot would be:

✅ Set up the trial unit

✅ Fine-tune stimulation settings using a specialist tablet

✅ Explain how to use the L300 Go

If needed, we can extend the trial period to help you make an informed decision.

Step 3: Purchase and Follow-Up Appointments

If the trial is successful, we will process your order for a new FES system. Our package includes:

  • 1x Bioness L300 Go system
  • 1x Initial setup appointment
  • 3x Review appointments (at 3, 6, and 12 months)

These review appointments ensure that the stimulation settings are adjusted as your walking improves over time.

Certified Supplier

What If I’m Not Suitable for the Bioness L300 Go?

If the orthotist determines that the L300 Go is not suitable for you, they will recommend alternative orthotic solutions. Should you wish to proceed with an alternative, the orthotist will take measurements, casts, or scans as needed.
