However, sometimes the best results will be achieved through input from a team of professions, and that’s why our multidisciplinary team are always on hand to help, from one off advice sessions to ongoing care.
Chris has a degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics from the University of Salford. Since graduating Chris has built up a wealth of experience in both NHS and private practice. He runs clinics across the North of England. Chris is passionate about orthotics and is always looking to update the service with the latest innovations. Chris is now a clinical leader of Orthotics and Beast Prosthetics.
In your initial assessment your orthotist will ask you questions about the problems you have been experiencing and goals for the future. You may also be asked about any current devices you use and how you’ve been finding them. They will ask relevant questions about your lifestyle and ask you to give us a summary of any medical background they should know of.
Your orthotist will then carry out a visual analysis. Depending on your needs this could consist of gait analysis, taking a look at the way you move or carry out everyday tasks or simply taking a look at the area of concern. If you currently use an orthotic device then your orthotist will ask to see it, and may wish to see how you walk or move with it on.
Your orthotist will then carry out a physical assessment which could involve them feeling the area for any irregularities, checking your strength and the range of movement of your joints to find out how well you can move your body both independently and with their help.
When your orthotist has completed your assessment, they will explain their findings to you. They will advise you of any problems they have identified and recommend ways to address them. We will take time to discuss your options thoroughly to come up with the best possible solution before going ahead.
If you have been recommended a bespoke orthotic, your orthotist will then take measurements so that your device can be made for you. This could involve taking a cast using plaster bandage, a scan using a special device for computer aided design, an impression of your foot using an impression box or using specialist measuring tools.
